What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is a type of air conditioning unit that can also be used to heat your home. It transfers heat from the air outside to the air inside your home. In the winter, the process is reversed and your heat pump transfers the heat from your home to the air outside. This allows you to have warm air in your home even when the temperature outside is below freezing.

How Do Heat Pumps Work?

Heat pumps are able to transfer heat from one place to another by using a refrigerant. The refrigerant is compressed and cooled in the outdoor unit of your heat pump. The refrigerant then transfers the heat to the indoor unit of your heat pump.

The refrigerant is then expanded and heats your home. In the summer, the heat pump works in the opposite way. The refrigerant transfers the heat from your home to the outdoor unit of your heat pump. The refrigerant is then compressed and cooled, and the cooled refrigerant is sent outside.

What Size Heat Pump Do You Need?

When selecting a heat pump for your home, the first step is to determine the correct size for your heating needs. The best way to do this is to calculate the heating load for your home.

The heating load is the number of BTUs (British Thermal Units) needed to heat your home. To calculate your heating load, multiply the area of your home by 20. The result is the number of BTUs needed to heat your home.

The size of your heat pump is important because a unit that is too small will not be able to heat your home efficiently and a unit that is too big will be more expensive to operate and will cause your electric bill to be higher than necessary.

Signs You Need a New Heat Pump

As reliable as heat pumps are, they do eventually need to be replaced. If you are looking to replace your old unit, it is important to know the signs that your heat pump is nearing the end of its life.

Common signs that you need to replace your heat pump include:

  • High energy bills: If you have noticed that your energy bills have been much higher recently, it could be that your heat pump is working much harder to heat your home. As a heat pump gets older, it will have a harder time heating your home efficiently.
  • Uneven heating: If some areas of your home are warmer than others, it could be that your heat pump is not working properly. An older unit may have a difficult time cooling some areas of your home.
  • Strange noises: An old, worn-out heat pump will start to make some noises as it struggles to keep your home warm. If you notice clanking, rattling, or squealing coming from your unit, it may be time to replace it.
  • Short cycling: If you notice that your heat pump is turning on and off very frequently, it could be that your unit is struggling to keep your home warm. An older heat pump will run longer to heat your home, which will cause it to turn on and off frequently.

What Are the Most Common Heat Pump Repairs?

If your heat pump is not working correctly you might notice that the heat pump does not run or the heat pump may run constantly.

Some of the most common issues our certified professional repair heat pump technicians see are:

  • Dirty air filters
  • Incorrectly sized heat pump
  • Faulty starter capacitor
  • Blown blower motor
  • Tripped circuit breaker
  • Thermostat problems

Heat Pumps Are Energy Efficient

Heat pumps are a great option for heating your home because they are extremely energy efficient. They are able to heat your home more efficiently than other types of heating systems because they provide heat in colder temperatures and cool air when it is hot outside.

Heat pumps are also extremely reliable and durable. They can last for decades if properly maintained. They are up to 98.5% energy efficient and provide 1.5 to 3 times more heat energy than the electricity they consume, and require less clearance when installed because they move heat from inside to outside as needed instead of generating additional heat.

Adding a heat pump to your current HVAC system can be a wise investment to save on heating and cooling costs while reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and reducing your carbon footprint. Heat pumps work with and without ducted air conditioning and heating systems so they can be adapted to most systems that are already installed.
